So what is the Matte idea???

So I have the classic normal oily combo skin!! Yep in the T zone... more little t ... you know up and down the center and across the upper cheek area. Anyway back in the summer I just sort of dealt with it... I mean it was hot and sweaty anyway... so I just played it off as "dewy" LOL. But in the winter, Hello you know I am not sweating outside if there is snow on the ground!!! So while cleaning out my makeup area(which is something you should try... you find so many things you forgot you own!!) so I was cleaning and I found the Boots Expert Instant Matte liquid that Vannessa(VANEWPC) told me about back in the summer months. Well hello it works!!! Check out the quick video I did just for this post!!!

The 3 Steps to Matte!

And the best part... this product is local to most of us!! If you have a Target... you have about a 95% chance of finding this product... and hold on. The best part... it's only about $6 bucks!!! So yes you too can be fairy Matte for a good part of your day for only $6!! Enjoy!

MARK.ed the spot.

So back in July Linda Granillo, a MARK. rep, sent samples for us to try at the Blogging Beauties of NYC hosted by Yana and Brittany. Linda sent up some deluxe sample packs for us to farther check out... The first item I'm reviewing: Juice Gems retailing for $6 for .5 oz! A shot of gloss, fruit, and glimmer!
So like the Magalog says: "High-shine tinted gloss...real fruit extract" Linda sent me Cherry Pop... it's like cherry kisses for your lips. This gloss is not too sticky and has hint of golden shimmer running thru it... BY NO MEANS glitter... just a soft shimmer. Linda also sent me a few samples of skincare that I will be reviewing in the coming weeks! Here are some pictures of the rest of what she sent me. If you are looking to order MARK.... try Linda. Right now she has a code for free shipping over $25!

So much going on!!

Sorry everyone!! So much has been going on since the beginning of this month... my poor blog and you all have missed out! I'll try to recap as much as I can.

Ok so most of you know I got a part time job with MAC!! WOOT WOOT!! That doesn't mean I will be all about them in my videos, tweets, or blog post... But it means I will be able to share more than just eyeshadow colors and lipsticks. Skincare is the base of any great makeup!! And this company has more than a few great skincare products!! Even though a lot of people know about these products... there are many uses for them!! And everyone wants more for the money right?!? RIGHT.
Also, I am over the moon for Maybelline's Color Sensational lipsticks... I have 6 so far!! They are super pigmented, true color, creamy... they are dreams!!! Here are the swatches of the ones I have so far.

So I had training for my new job for 5 days! It was intense... boy!!! WOW... so much to learn... like I said before... more than just eyeshadows, lipsticks, and paintpots!!! At the end I was even MORE excited to work... nothing beats being prepared for a job with all the training. One of the best parts of training.... THE PEOPLE... AWESOME!!! All levels of artists were there... so if you are a semi beginner or a independent freelancer... you can work your magic. I have heard a lot of people say they stayed away from applying at MAC because of the 5 day in a row training session that you have to take. #1 most people start in store or at counter WEEKS before they go to training. #2 if you miss a day you just have to make it up before you can get certified. #3 I'm about 95% sure travel and food is PAID for. So, talk to your local Counter mgr or Freestanding store mgr when you pick up your application. Another thing I loved about training... it wasn't stressful at all... of course you're being watched and it's like school... but it's safe! Everyone is learning and everyone really wants to be there... from the trainers, to the visiting Execs, and artist from different locations.

So my 2 spotlight products of the week:

MAC Wipes and Maybelline Color Sensational lipsticks

Wipes
If the wipes feel too rough for you here's a hint(I learned years ago) with the package closed... store wipes upside down! Keeps even the top wipe moist. That roughness is the sugar embedded in the cloth. Also some people say the skin feels too moist after using the wipes... That's product that helps remove all makeup and prep skin for the next look quickly

Lipstick
48 pigment rich shades! I've never loved a drugstore lip product as much as I love this!! And you can find coupons online and in the Sunday newspapers!! The honey nectar that feeds the lips doesn't add a scent or stickiness. Look above for the swatches of the 6 I own! Find your shade
here!

Soooo that was a lot! Remember I have that contest coming up as soon as I reach 2,000 subs on my youtube channel!! The prizes.. I already did a video for!! and the POT IS GROWING!!! So I hope you all sub and tell your friends!! Most likely it will be after the Christmas/ December holidays so you might get an extra Holiday Gift of MAKEUP!! WOOT WOOT

LOTD... A new found Fav combo!!!

So I just got this lipstick from Maybelline and I'm in love (I can't wait for BOGO)!!! I just picked this ColorSENSATIONAL I was editting and playing with my stash and this is the combo I came up with. So here's the 5 steps to how I created the look!

1. Make sure you lips are clean and flake free... use some sort of primer or lip scrub.

2. I used Vital Radiance's Soft Plum, this happens to be an eyeliner, and lined around my natural lip line. I went a little thick with the line.

3. Using Maybelline's new ColorSensational lipstick in #445 On The Mauve straight from the tube I filled in my lips with color! (ohh so creamy!!)

4. Blend lips together

5. Topped it off with MAC's Bling Black GlimmerGlass

Taa Daa!

Let me know which of the ColorSensational's you've tried, cause I'm sooo going back for more!!!

Makeup Tips of course
After using makeup for so long... I know I'm not the only one with tips and personal tricks that I use. So here are some of my favs! I asked on Twitter last night and this morning: I'll share the cutiest @ or DM with you all!

Mine:
skin
1.
Really Really Really try to remove your makeup before you go to bed!! This is a good practice because it keeps your pillows clean and your skin a bit more healthy.
2. To help with number 1... keep a package of Makeup Remover wipes at your bedside.... for those... "Darn I forgot to take off my makeup" nights. There are a ton of brands out there. Right now I'm using Korres, but once they are done I'm going back to my old faith fun Target brand Makeup remover wipes.
3. Even in the winter months we still need sunblock.
4. If you are drier in the fall/winter months switch up your facial lotion... maybe to a non oil-free. Switch back in the warm months!

makeup
5.
Give the look a chance! Many many times I've gotten to about 3/4 of the way done with a look and started to hate how it was coming out. I mean did everything but the liner and lashes and was hmmm errr'ing in my head... 3 sec from removing it and decided.... maybe I should finish the look and see. TAA DAA!! A bit of liner and lashes can really change a look. So the tip: Always finish a look to the end, cause it's the finishing touches that really pull it together!
6. Cotton swabs are your friends... those little wands are very powerful and can help you out in tough spots! Ever over wing the liner??? YES. Just grab a swab with some remover and have at it!
7. Ok so now you have attacked that misguided winged out liner... and now what.... if you went to far and you see your bare skin..... you have to start over in that spot. It's a pain but worth it. So re-prime, powder(or spot of liquid) UPDD(Tarte, Lumene, 2Face, Vital Rad.), eye shadow... the works. And guess what? Use that trusty Cotton swab again!

8. Ok so you decided to go with a liquid liner in black. You made the perfect lines and then... wow that's a bit intense! Grab a small tipped brush(smudger brush, inner corner, or some other tiny mini eyeshadow brush) and with a color from your look(I'd use the mid tone or deepest of the look) and sweep it over the line. This keeps it in the family and tones down the black line. So you don't have to redo the line!
9. Important. It doesn't have to be a million dollars to work! If you only use CoverGirl cosmetics cause that's all you can buy... then WORK IT! Most of us Makeup heads have more than one brand we use! I, like others can really work a $6 dollar quad just the same as a $35 dollar one! 10. Write down your combos/looks. After your down or maybe while you're on a morning break at school or work. Write down your FOTD... so when you're in a rut or in a rush and you can't think of what to do... go to the "FOTD's I Love" section in your notebook!

11. If you pencil in, powder in, or gel in your eyebrows... PLEASE remember to bring that product in your Makeup bag! You never know if you see a hottie and he makes you sweat... you dab your brow and then IT's GONE!!! LOL (ok stop laughing it happened to me YEARS ago).

12.Keep your makeup area organized. I love to label my drawers not only with eyeshadow, but if you have a lot break it down ie. purple eye shadows, H.I.P Duos, lashes, cream blushes, eye glitter, dark lipsticks.

The sweetiest Makeup tip from Twitter:

Weebeasty: My favorite make up tip ever came from my Great grandma who told me that the perfect red lipstick is a must have. Always.

So with all the makeup you have in your collection, play with it, enjoy it and always give it a chance. Take care of your skin cause it's the best base for your art!

IFB event on Monday Sept 14th

Independent Fashion Bloggers(IFB) held it's 2nd annual Dress Up Soiree on September 14th, in the heart of NYC's Chinatown. Even tho I am mostly a Beauty blogger, I had the chance to go to the event to get some really useful information from Jennine Tamm and a handful of key speakers. The Fashion bloggers spoke mostly about fashion topics, but in a board way that anyone with any type of blog could benefit.
The event started off with a bang!! While on-line outside I met Suzanne Kuhn, Freelance Writer and Author, and ladies she was rocking these hot hot shoes.... can you believe it... I've never seen shoes like this before! They are Ashish for Top Shop. So Suzanne and I talked for a while what events we did this Fashion week, about our blogs, her shoes LOL, things like that. Once inside the event I have to say I wasn't too happy with what happened. First off my Beauty blogging buddy (say that 3 times fast) Yana, from My Own Judge, who had invited me to this event.... could not attend as planned. For some reason they were carding at the front door and since there was a bar you had to be 21 or over with ID to attend. Ok first off ...what if you didn't have your license? or state ID? Many NY'ers don't have licence and she didn't have her ID with her. Next, this was a Bloggers event NOT a Wine tasting event!! I saw 3 people get turned away. Not cool. They should have done hand stamps or wrist bands for the 21 and over. I have to say I was really upset by this. Once inside Suzanne had the print out of the invite and NO WHERE on it did it state you had to be 21 or over to attend. So that totally put a damper on the night! And Yana's outfit was super cute!
So while we were inside the venue was PACKED! Nice to see so many young bloggers out.... male and females! I saw a few bloggers I read and I also got to interview a few people that were attending the meet and greet. Since it was more of a Fashion blog event I took that time to intro myself and see what the Fashion people were thinking about beauty blogs. Here we go.
What made you start with beauty blogs?
Cynthia: She wanted to find more information on " day to night looks" since she's a working chick and needed help with office to nightlife.
What do you look for in Beauty Blogs?
Josephine: She didn't look for only high end products reviews "I like to see it all", and wants to see more "how-to's"
Roslyn: She wasn't into the makeup as much, but was "looking for the deals."
What keeps you coming back to the blog?
Dolapo: Tone, content, how often they post... "how realist and true to themselves" the blogger is. "with the way the economy is now, is this blogger relating to Who is watching them."
Cecile: She wants to see more "tuts on blogs maybe with links to videos."
How do you find your beauty blogs?
Ngozi: She finds Beauty blogs via word of mouth, blog rolls, and "if I get a link on Twitter that is of interest," she'll read and follow the blog.

So even though I missed the big Beauty Bloggers event I still got some useful information about blogging in general from the IFB. The panel talked about copyrighting, finding your our blog voice, writing about what you really care about, and how to credit pics and info. The event was a bit crowded and because of the misinformation regarding the entrance... I did not have a blast, but I still managed to have a decent time. We parted the event with a pretty nice goodie bag including cards, samples from Starbucks, discount codes from Moxie and 365 Hangers, and a full size tube of Bad Gal Lash from Benefit.

Fashion Week NYC 2009: The Hillary Flowers show

Hey all! So as you may know I worked the Hillary Flowers Fashion Week 2009 fashion show on September 10th. The show started at 11pm and was awesome.... I will have some more pictures when the event photos are up on Hillary's site. The clothes were amazing, the models were great, the space was tight but 100% fun! I got to meet some great people and also see some familiar faces!
Girlcanpaint aka Ivette and I worked the show together. I found the listing Hillary put out for her show, and I signed up and then told Ivette about it! It was great having a friend there! Then in walked Nicole, a fellow makeup artist I met back on May 2nd at the FDU fashion show!!! So it was a great night altogether. We each created 3 models looks.
I have 2 more events this Fall Fashion Week! I can't wait to tell you all more about them! Details coming soon!!

MAX FACTOR goes bye bye for the US market!

I was watching BellaMakeupINC on youtube and as she was applying her makeup she mentioned that Max Factor will be going out of business. I thought... NO WAY! So I googled and low and below Max Factor owned by Procter & Gamble Co will be pulling the products from the US shelves the first quarter of 2010. So not out of business, but off of US shelves. It seems that Max Factor doesn't sell well here, but in places like the UK it outsells Covergirl. I'm not sure about you but that 2000 Calorie Mascara is pretty hot. I feel like I should stock up, but who knows it the product will dry up before I get to use it??? Here are some facts from the Times Online article:

The brand was created in 1909 by Max Factor, a makeup artist at the Royal Ballet in Russia who emigrated the US. Mr Factor moved to California, where he set up a shop that specialised in makeup for films, creating a thinner version of the greasepaint traditionally used by stage actors.

Although Max Factor makeup later graced the faces of famous beauties including Rita Hayworth and Marilyn Monroe, it was worn for the first time on camera by a man – the actor Henry B Walthall, who worked as a model for screen tests.

It's hard to believe that a cosmetic line, that has been around for over 100 years is beginning discounted in this country.... I thought we are so beauty conscious. The more brands the merrier!! Well, I guess if you see your favs on sale grab them up... cause it's only September now BUT 2010 is so around the corner!

For more info google: max factor out of business

sources:
Times Online:
P&G phasing out Max Factor in America
Reuters: P&G to phase out Max Factor in the United States
Cosmeics Design: P&G phases out Max Factor distribution in US

Spotlight Line: Purus Cosmetics by Dana Laurie

Does that name look familiar? What if I dropped a few letters and added potter16??? Now the bells are ringing! It's Purus Cosmetics from the Youtuber DanaPotter16. Ok so what's the scoop. I first met young Dana back in Sept 2008 while hanging out with Koren for his birthday! Check out the video. Let me say I was impress that this young girlie got into the city all alone... these city kids!! So she told me that she wanted to have her own cosmetics line one day... and that day was over 6 months ago. Dana is the founder and CEO of Purus Cosmetics. It seems that tragedies can steer people onto better paths. "Worried about cancer, she searched for things to avoid." Dana strived to create a line that was safe and affordable to use.
When July 25th came around and I walked into the First Beauty Bloggers event I was over joyed to see the teenager and her sister there! We caught up(I asked about her summer... so Mother Hen) and then she told me about her line! I was happy and might I say not the least bit shocked... Dana looked like a determined young lady from the get go. She spilled out of her bag an array of pigments that made my mouth water...but went Plummeting Plink came out ... I stopped cold. "Can I have that?" I swear the 1st thing out of my mouth.... the color is like no other.... perfectly purple, plum, and grape all rolled into a shimmery bath of pigmentness!HAA HAA say that 3 times fast. I recovered and asked nicely! Dana was happy to hook me up!! I swatched it and was in love!!! Dana had to leave too early from the event... so I could really talk to her more about the line... but once I got home I went to check it out.... here's the scoop. Shaliners(TM) are a multi use "powder to cream commonly used as eyeshadow, liner, and cheek color". There are 20 colors for sale now for $6.50 for 2.27g. A little goes a long way! Dana takes Paypal also! Like I said, I wish I wasn't so smitten with this wonderful color I would have swatched more... but the swatches on her site is pretty close to the real life colors. My Cheap Fix!

So, I had a crazy week and needed a quick fix... makeup wise of course! I headed to Walmart because I needed a box for storing my nail polishes (thanks Zoya and Twitter, LOL). As I was leaving my Walmart I passed a Sally Beauty Supply and there was my fix! Sally's has good deals BOGO's, Free with purchase items... and this month they had Sally Girl cosmetics buy 5 get 1 free. I was cruising the eye shadows and found myself saying, "JES, girl you know you have MORE than enough eye shadows." So I picked thru the over 50 nail polish colors to find 5 that I liked. More like... I was holding myself to only buying 5 that I liked. While I was looking I noticed these little signs stating that these polished were Formaldehyde, DBP, and Toluene Free! How exciting, right! So I picked up 5 at 99 cents each. If you are a Beauty Club member they are 89 cents. I picked up: It's So U, Surfs Up, In The Pink, Not My Type, and U Betcha.(left to right as pictured). I'm excited to try this puppies and see how I like them. I read the reviews and they seemed mixed. But if you are looking for a really affordable range of colors from funky to french bases... there is another brand out there: Sally Girl.
I also have 6 of there eye shadows already and I am happy with them. They have a cute snap together packaging that's easy on the traveling makeup bag! Sally Beauty Supply is on Twitter, also found across the USA and International locations, and will ship orders! Happy shopping!

I'm thinking with the week I just had...

Another eye Primer to Love!

So it's no guess that I love bright colors on my eyes!! One of the best ways to make your eye shadows really pop is adding an eye primer to your makeup routine! Along with a base or all alone eye primers really help add depth to all of your eye shadows from the dollar store lines to the highest of high ends! I have to say, I have more than a few eye primers I love using... but Tarte Cosmetics "Lifted" Natural Eye Primer with Firmtol is... well AMAZING!!!
"Lifted" comes in a convented tube very similar to most lipglosses and has a flocked tip. You might be asking "with Firmtol"... what is that? Via Tarte's website this is a formula that tightens the eyelid skin in up to 51% of the users and in as little as 10 mins after applying! After reading this I wanted to try this out... and the best way(for my skin tone) is to use a lighter color. So I applied the Lifted Natural Eye Primer with Firmtol and then Stila's Slate eyeshadow (might be discounted) all over the lid and blended up. Added a few more touches and this is the outcome. I have to say I don't have issues with my eyelid area, but the skin did feel a bit smoother and that color didn't go anywhere!! The product is riddled with natural plant extracts like: ginseng root and portulaca oleracea. Just as it's filled with the good ... Tarte has taken out the other stuff ... leaving Lifted Natural Eye Primer free of : dyes, talc, paraben, and gluten. If you're in the market for a new or another primer give this one a test.

Sephora Fall 09

If you haven't seen the catalog yet... oh boy. It is filled with some great ideas for Fall. I can't say it's all original I mean a Cat eye is a Cat eye is a... well Cat eye, but I guess it's always fun to revisit a favorite. Some of the items I've been excited about are those color tipped brushes. I mean just to have one. And I bet you can all guess which color I'm aiming for... yep the deep purple!! So, I was out and about yesterday... and I got to the mall. 3 things to say about that trip I finally saw in person the MAC's ColorCraft collection and well let's just say there is no Haul video coming on Youtube. Next thing Sephora did not have any of those funky brushes in-store for me to look at. 3rd I asked really in jest, my Sephora is sort of small, if they had any of the Lauren Luke stuff... the SA looked at me like I had 3 heads!!! I can't understand how people don't use all the wealth of knowledge that is YOUTUBE. I'm not saying you have to do videos... but Youtube is not a new website. It is in the news at least 4 times a day. Teachers, Students, Government, Fashion Designers, Makeup Artist, Newscasters, Talk shows and the list goes on use Youtube. Why can't a simple SA in the Sephora get a clue and look into it. And I know you are all like why is JES so mad? When I worked in retail... I was an Assistant Manger, I'm not saying I brought home my work all the time. But I knew the trends, looked up things, talked to people and tried to keep ahead of it all. But most of all I surely did not look like a deer in headlights when asked about a PRODUCT LINE newly LAUNCHED within my company!!!! I really dislike knowing more than the SA. Just so you know this female was about my age, so she wasn't a kid looking to make some summer money nor was she a Great Grandma not into computers (not saying Great Grandma's can't do computers). She didn't even ask me who it was, what it was, or offered to check the website. I mean come on. She really needs some Customer service 101!! I bet if I said Illamasqua her head would have spun.
Ok I think I went off on a tangent... I hope you are all still with me. Back to the Sephora catalog. Did anyone see on page 18 the crescent moon shapes at the bottom of the nail beds? Anyone try it yet? Let's see some pictures. Also matte nail polishes are back... remember around 99 they were in (wait was it 99 or 96?) That matte look lasted all of 2 months if I remember correctly at least in my area. I think I'll pass on investing any money in top coats or matte polishes UNTIL about the early holiday time, by that time the drugstores will have comparable options for me.

The next thing I saw was on page 4 brows! I'm guessing with the cooler weather my forehead will need more warmth!! Another trend I'm not going crazy about... I might fill in a tad more but nothing crazy. So if you see me with huge fro like brows point me to this post!!! I asked CandieCC about this on her online radio interview a few days ago. I think she was in agreement with me... to thick is not for her either! You guys know I love the brows, I believe they are a big part of the total makeup look. I was able to try another Brow pencil by Tarte here's my review.

And in closing... if you have the catalog in front of you right now.... did you see the glove on top of her head? Will that be the trend also... I have to say... in this picture it works. No clue tho if the average lady could pull this off.

ZOYA... ohh boya!

Ok so at the wonderful Beauty Bloggers meet up on July 25th, I got introduced to ZOYA nail polishes! Ok let me backtrack a bit...

As most of you know I am a mother of 2 wonderful, but crazy boys... a 27 month old and a 12 month old. They love nothing more than making a mess and hurting themselves! So painting my nails and having to wait for them to dry... is just not something I can do a lot UNLESS my hubby is home to take care of the boys for 2 hours(drying time). Ok so now back to the ZOYA. On Saturday we had the pleasure of getting manicures from Jacqueline Saulsbery, a celeb manicurist, who works with ZOYA. I picked this spring green color Midori and LOVED IT(here's a pic)!!! So we got some great products in our Goodie bag and one was a ZOYA Minicure kit... almost like a "try me" kit. I started after the baby went to bed and by the time his short nap was over I was DRY and NO bubbles!!! Do a happy dance!!

In the Minicure kit: 1oz ZOYA remover, .25 oz ZOYA Anchor, .25 oz ZOYA Nail Lacquer, .25 oz ZOYA Armor, and .25 oz ZOYA Hurry Up(with a little dropper).

So a little about each! The remover is a 3 in 1 remover. It is a light acetone polish remover, nail cleaner, and 1 step in the nail prep. I'm not going to lie to you... it still smells like regular nail polish remover, but with a touch of citrus(maybe it's me)! As I just did my nails on Friday night to go the event I didn't have to do a manicure. Plus, like I said I had the Midori still on(perfect I might add) so I just went right on to the next step which was the basecoat called Anchor. This step and product helps "adhere color to the nail by forming a bond between the nail plate and polish.*" Just one light coat of the Anchor is needed. Then on to the color, in the kit Shiloh comes with. As I just checked the website for the link I have to say the color on the website looks more pinky red and the in real life bottle reminds me of a candied apple with shimmer. I did 2 coats just to test out how long 2 coats would take. I could have done only one coat... this stuff is creamy in a good way. Next step for me.... the blow dryer I had to... I heard my son stirring. So I dried step 3 for about 5 mins each. Then sealed the color with 1 coat of thick Armor, the topcoat and UV block. Also the Armor gives the polish "a flexible, long-wearing protective finish*" I also dried this step for about 4 mins. Next the best part of this kit... the Hurry Up drops! No scent with this liquid that you drop on the base of the nails and it dries, prevents bubbling, and pops the color of the polish. I am not sure if the drops work with other brands I will have to update you about that.

Over all the process including drying time 45mins and that's finishing with BONE DRY... ready to pick the baby nails! Go check out ZOYA.... now I know why Brittany(Clumps Of Mascara) has a collection of this brand. I think my next step is to pick up one of their samplers... maybe this one.
